Char-Griller 5050 Duo Gas-and-Charcoal Grill Review

Ok, so this is for the grill, NOT the price. Amazon's price on this item is WAY too high but that isn't what the review is for... I got mine at a sporting goods store for under $250 so shop around.

This is a fantastic grill, it is really versitile.

Pros:
- Allows you to cook with charcoal, gas, or smoke (with the optional side firebox)
- The 3 burners on the gas side are close to the cooking surface which makes it really easy to control the cooking temperature.
- The side firebox somes with cooking grates for grilling 1-2 steaks

Cons:
- The grease pan is difficult to clean
- The ash tray can be cumbersome to remove
- It could really use some better wheels, this is a HEAVY grill if you have the firebox attached and moving it around is tough.
- No option for using natural gas as a fuel source

The Cons are all relatively minor in my opinion. This is a great grill, I'd buy another one for sure.

Broil King 94974 Crown 70 Liquid-Propane Gas Grill with Rotisserie Review

Broil King 94974 Crown 70 Liquid-Propane Gas Grill with Rotisserie
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent a couple of months researching grills before I decided on the Broil King 70.I wanted a rotisserie and removable or drop shelves, because I have a smaller balcony. This grill fit my needs perfectly!

I only installed one shelf because of size limitations.Assembly was a little awkward, but very straight-forward.The only problem was that about 4 of the screws are in tight places requiring a little wrench acrobatics.I've been cooking on it for a few weeks and it lights effortlessly. The rotisserie works like a dream, cooking a 6lb turkey breast and boneless lamb leg to perfection. I don't think I could get a whole turkey to fit, however.

I'm kicking myself that I wasted 2 months of the summer doing research instead of buying this one right away!

Char Broil T480 Three-Burner 40,000 BTU Gas Grill, with Sideburner Review

Char Broil T480 Three-Burner 40,000 BTU Gas Grill, with Sideburner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I purchased the Char-Broil T480 3-Burner 40,000 BTU Gas Grill I did so for several reasons: features, reliability and price. For me the Char-Broil had more of what was important than any other grill I looked at.

Assembly:
On a difficulty rating I'd give this a 7 and I've put together everything from Bikes to Ikea Furniture. Out of the box this didn't scare me, but it did take about 45-60 minutes from start to finish.

Use & Features:
It has an electronic ignition for all of the burners. My only complaint so far is that the button is rubber and dried up very quickly from the heat. Mine detached from the grill, but still works as long as it doesn't get lost.
The warming rack although a great idea, hasn't really been useful to us. Even though it's raised up on the back portion of the grill it takes up too much space and makes getting to what is grilling beneath it very difficult.
The side burner is great for heating up sauces, baked beans, making grilled onions or even frying bacon.
Temperature gauge on outer front is useful. I'm not sure of accuracy, but it has helped me pre-heat the grill when I do things like tri-tip or beer can chicken.
The two wheels on the bottom make it easy for me to maneuver around on our deck and also for storing.

Grilling:
I used to be a firm believer of grilling only with briquettes, but when you want to do it as often as we do it's just not possible. During the summer we use the grill about 2-4 times a week and during the winter we still use it at least once a week.I have become very comfortable with this grill, knowing how long to preheat, how long to cook and what works best. The 3 separate burners allow me to heat only the grates we need. Most often it's one for just a small dinner, but we have had all three going when cooking for a large crowd.

Clean-Up:
After cooking I give the grates and initial scraping with the Mr. Bar-B-Q Wide Grill Brush and then I usually turn the burners I had been using up to HIGH for about 60 seconds. This seems to burn off any excess food and keeps it ready to go for next time. As long as you take care of this grill you should be able to get many years of service and delicious food from it!

Storing: We purchased a cover for it since we do have it out year round (and in rainy Seattle no less). This Weber 7555 Premium Cover, although not meant for our grill, has been our favorite one.The quality of the materials and weight of it have kept ours clean and covered even through some pretty bad storms. We figured it we were investing the money in a grill; we should invest in this too.

The Weber was top rated by a consumer testing firm and they are right.

It cooks great, has lots of power and can also cook at low temps.

I owned my last Weber for over 15 years and love this new one.

You can spend less and get lower quality and more for a bigger grill; but this grill looks great, cooks great and is big enough for most peoples needs.

Ducane has been making notable grills for decades.A few years ago, the company was bought by Weber. For a mid-priced grill, this is the one to go with.Burners and grates are Weber standard.Outside, thinner steel and a few minor short-cuts bring the price point down, but still far superior to a Char-Broil or Brinkman class grill.Heat is even. Porcelain coated grates. For about $300 less, you get the heart of a Weber. And for those of you who hate cleaning stainless steel, another plus.

Char Broil K6B Six-Burner 65,000 BTU Gas Grill, with Sideburner Review

Char Broil K6B Six-Burner 65,000 BTU Gas Grill, with Sideburner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw this grill at Walmart for $295 and, even though im single and live alone, i felt the need to buy the largest grill in the store. The first thing you notice about this grill is IT IS HUGE!. You could easily have a bbq for a large group of people with this grill, so if your on a budget and like to entertain in the summer, this is definitely the way to go. After getting the box home and opening it up you will stare at the parts and say to yourself "what did i get myself in to".I think i could have had it assembled for free but i wanted it right then and there.Actually it only took me 1.5 hours to put the whole thing together, so assembly is not that bad. Considering though that i am a mechanical engineer i would hope i could put a grill together... Once assembled, i grabbed a few porkchops and threw them on.If you have never used an infrared searing burner before, YOU NEED TO.This grill easily produced the juiciest pork chops i have ever made.I have used full infrared grills before but i suggest the separate infrared burner over the full infrared grill, because you have more latitude to grill at varying temps, vs a full infrared grill which will be ridiculously hot all the time.So far i have grilled pork chops, ribs, sirloin steaks, chicken corn and even perogies on this grill and everytime my food was done perfectly and evenly.I was very impressed for a 295 dollar grill. All of the components of the grill seem to be very solid and well made, the stainless tube burners are cheap to replace which is a plus. The downfall of the grill is the ignitor. It seems very solid so i doubt it will break quickly like most cheap grills, however the negative is that it only ignites one burner in the middle so to use the searing burner you have to light one burner at a time untill you get to it.There is a rail along the back which seems to be used for directing the flame across the back so you can light any burner off of it, but it doesn't really work that way.Although this is fairly minor and is only annoying the first couple uses. The other thing is that, if this grill is like other cheap grills, it will probably rust out, even if you keep it covered.Although i expect that this grill will last at least 3 or 4 seasons, which is worth the money in my opinion, especially at this price point.

So in conclusion, if you are looking for a grill on a budget, buy this right now before its out of stock.I noticed the walmart by me already removed most of the grills from display and its the beginning of JUNE!!.It cooks great, has a searing burner, 7 burners total, can cook for a crowd and is very solidly constructed.I guarantee you will get tons of compliments when your family, friends, and neighbors lay their eyes on it.They will be jealous.

Weber 3741001 Genesis E-310 Propane Gas Grill, Black Review

Weber 3741001 Genesis E-310 Propane Gas Grill, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There's really nothing more that can be said to further the reputation of this series of grills. Those of us that own the Genesis E-310 series grill know how well this grill is manufactured, and just how very well it performs its duties. It is, by far, the very best gas grill in this price range I have ever owned or used.A couple of notes:
-The cross-over ignition system works wonderfully (it takes less than 3 seconds to fire up all three burners
-Those who say that their gas grill does not get hot enough to sear meats don't own this grill- I've had it up to 550 degrees on a very cold MN winter day
-That said, it seems to go through a good amount of propane when running all 3 burners on high...but that is probably obvious considering the temps you can obtain when running it on full.(It will be interesting to see if I can get 500 + degrees to sear meats on medium setting on a summer day....).The fuel gauge inside the cabinet is also a handy feature
-As always with this series of grills- No Flare ups, and the flavorizer bars do what Weber says they will, namely vaporize fats and juices into smoke that adds flavor to what you are grilling
-To keep this review balanced, there is one negative- I dislike the tool holders.Although there are plenty, your tools pretty much have to have one of those leather hanging loop things to keep the tools from falling off or even to use the holders (a small price to pay I guess)

Finally, the Genesis E-310 I purchased came in a copper color, something I haven't seen on Amazon, or on Weber's site for that matter.Maybe I missed it, or maybe I got lucky.Either way, it looks pretty darn sharp on our deck when it isn't covered.

Product Description:
No more annual overhauls, Weber's Genesis grill is built for high-performance grilling for years to come. The Genesis E-310 gas grill features an enclosed cart with stainless steel doors and handles for easy, scratch-free cleaning. A stainless steel shroud with a center-mounted thermometer is bordered with shiny, cast-aluminum end caps.
The cooking system, rated at 42,000 Btu's, includes 3 seamless stainless steel burners. For easy starts, an electronic Crossover ignition system lights all three burners in succession with the push of a button. Weber's porcelain-enameled Flavorizer bars eliminate grease-fueled flare-ups that often occur with standard lava rocks and ceramic briquettes. Fats and juices are vaporized when they hit the angled bars and quickly sizzle away, adding delicious, smoky barbecue flavor rather than cauterizing flames. Sturdy cooking grates feature 7-millimeter stainless steel rods. The primary cooking area measures 507 square inches. And, the unit's handy warming rack measures 130 square inches for a total cooking area of 637 square inches.

The Weber Summit line of grills have a design flaw that Weber refuses to consider an issue.Whenever it rains, water runs down the back and enters the internal drip tray, and empties into a drip pan.The pan then overflows the greasy mess onto the cabinet floor. Furthermore, the drip pan cannot be easily removed without almost totally spilling the greasy mess.

The BBQ was received as promised, delivery was fast and prompt. Delivery crew were professionals, and effective. It was a bit of a hassle putting it together, it took me about an hour, but no big deal, after all it IS a big product. Just pay close attention to all the parts, and follow the step-by-step instructions carefully, and you will be fine. It looks scarry at first, with all the parts, nuts and bolts, but as I said before, No Problem. Instructions are clear, with good illustrations.
Upon turning it on, the BBQ ignited instantly, and worked flawlessly. Heat distribution is good. This is our second natural Gas BBQ, and it is much better than the first one that cost 3 times as much.
All in all I am happy with the product, and definately it worth the price.
Happy BBQing.

Weber 3780001 Genesis S-320 Propane Gas Grill, Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The reason I bought this bbq was 1)it was rated the best bbq between $500 and $1000 by most all rating bureau's, 2)it uses high quality 302 s/s, 3)has s/s cooking racks which to me are easier to clean, 4) its a very pretty bbq, and 5) it's a Weber, made in the US.The E-320, withcolored panels, in my opinon, isn't as nice looking as the s/s unit.

I bought this bbq from Amazon about 10 days ago.It was shipped for free via Eagle Transportation.I think Amazon realized large items shipped UPS were arriving damaged. At least the few large items I previously ordered and shipped UPS arrived that way. The shipping estimate was 10-14 days with the free option.Four days after I saw that the item was shipped I received a call from Eagle's Los Angeles depot asking me when I wanted it delivered.I couldn't believe that !I told them the next day. They gave me a time frame, 10-1,asking if that was agreeable. At 11 Eagle arrived, off loaded my bbq in one huge box and asked where I wanted it.The box was completely intact and undamaged.I've never encountered that kind of service from any carrier.Cudos to Amazon on choosing this shipper.

Now, the bbq.Weber's Genesis S-320 LP.I'm a very handy guy with a garage full of tools.I unpacked all the parts and had them spread out on a blanket so I wouldn't scratch them on the cement floor.Everyone's greatest dread is the assembly instructions usually done in a foreign country and poorly translated in to English. But, since Weber is made in the USA, I found the step by step numbered instructions very easy to follow. All the little screws, washers, and bolts were nicely packaged and oh my goodness... they were all there. There were no shortages of any parts. One or two extras in a package would have been nice since I usually drop one of something and lose it somewhere under a bench in the garage.Anyway, the bbq went together effortlessly.I had my propane tank filled and used the weight hanger inside the stand which showed the tank was full.Another nice touch.

Now for the good part; using it.I did that tonight for the first time on Mother's Day.I thought that was appropriate.Anyway, I made cheesburgers - one of my most favorite bbq foods.I read the instructions on how Weber thought hamburgers should be cooked; medium heat with the lid down. They recommend always keeping hte lid down to cook and only opening it to turn the food or check to see if it's done.I also used the side burner just because... it's there.I've never had a bbq with a side burner and found it handy but a space hog.The bbq did what it is intended to do very well.It cooked my burgers in record time with the lid down.We also cooked corn on the cob wrapped in tin foil in the grill at the same time.Everything turned out great.

Now, my trivial gripes. The right side table has all the controls. That only leaves a very small amount of space between the control knobs and the bbq as a useable work area. One should be careful placing items in that area because being so close to the bbq it does tend to get a bit warm.I don't know why Weber couldn't put the controls on the front of the bbq leaving two nice sized working platforms.I found that a bit irritating especially when I used the left side burner.I had no place to set down plates, platters, etc.I had to pull up another small table.I don't know how often I'll actually use the side burner. If I don't use it ofen which I probably won't then it's really not an issue.

Did I say gripes?Well that's all I can think of.Overall, I'm very happy with the Weber Genesis S-320.I like it, alot.Would I buy it again if I only wanted to spend around $750??You bet !I can see why it's ratedhighly in all the reviews. And, you get Webers great guarantee and customer service.Go for it...you won't be disappointed.

Product Description:
For great flavor, gourmet searing, even cooking, multiple courses, easy cleaning, and good looks, nothing beats the Weber Genesis outdoor grill. An enclosed cart is great for storing cooking utensils and grilling supplies out of sight. Stainless steel doors, shroud, and handles look sharp, resist corrosion and are easy to clean. An accent-colored, painted steel frame offers plenty of cooking stability. A center-mounted thermometer makes it easy to monitor progress. And, for optimal durability over the years, Weber designed the Genesis with cast aluminum end caps.
The cooking system, rated at 42,000 Btu's, includes three seamless stainless steel burners and an electronic ignition system for easy starts. The cooking grates feature 7-milimeter-diameter stainless steel rods that won't warp or distort under flame for years of outdoor cooking fun. Weber's stainless steel, angled Flavorizer bars prevent fat- and grease-fueled flare-ups that over-sear foods. Rather than unwanted flames, juices drip on the bars where they sizzle and smoke; adding extra flavor to grilled chicken, steaks, and kabobs. And, if Bob wants burgers, Stacy wants steaks, and Vicky wants veggie burgers, there's plenty of room for all with 507 square inches of primary cooking area. Great for keeping the buns and side dishes warm with the entrees sizzle, the warming rack measures 130 square inches, for a total cooking area of 637 square inches. Top it off with a handy 12,000 Btu side burner for sauteing trimmings and you might opt for this grill over the kitchen stove--year round!
More great features include six tool holders, an enclosed tank storage area, a precision fuel gauge, two stainless steel work surfaces, two heavy duty locking front casters, and two heavy-duty swivel back casters. Don't know what to grill first? Weber throws in a handy cookbook so you can get summer grilling underway.

Char Broil Magnum 500 Quantum Infrared Three-Burner Gas Grill, with Sideburner Review

Char Broil Magnum 500 Quantum Infrared Three-Burner Gas Grill, with Sideburner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have always been a wood fire BBQ kind of guy - I like meat cooked over a *real* flame, and even charcoal has always seemed to me like cheating (though I've been using a charcoal Weber kettle for 20 years).I never even considered a gas grill for myself for these reasons.

For my senior Mom & Dad, however, the task of lighting charcoal, etc was too much hassle, so this past weekend I went out shopping for a gas grill for them. After going back and forth between three different home centers and Costco, I settled on this unit as by far the best "bang for the buck" in terms of build quality, performance characteristics, and ease of use for under $500.I seriously considered going up to the Weber Genesis, but for 50% more, I just couldn't quite justify it. My requirement was good quality for under $500.

After about a one-hour erector set project putting it all together (not difficult, just time consuming), I fired it up and let it burn off for about 20 minutes. I was immediately impressed with how hot the cooking surfaces became (and how quickly). The nifty temp sensors at the grate level registered 700+ degrees!

After burn-off, I tried it out with what I have found to be one of the trickiest things to grill over open flame (gas or wood/charcoal): raw marinated chicken parts. To be done right, the chicken has to be crispy on the outside - not burned, and moist and completely cooked on the inside. With unevenly shaped and sized chicken parts, this can be devilishly tricky.

But with this grill, I found I was able to keep the left most burner at full throttle, and the two right burners at low settings and get creative. This allowed me to beautifully sear the skin using the left side of the grill, then finish cooking on the right side (with the BBQ closed). The results were amazing.

One of my favorite things about this grill turned out to be that it is really easy to add wood chips for smoke flavor.Because there is a perforated metal "screen" (the infrared reflector) under the food, it catches the wood chips and holds them at a perfect smoking temperature where they will smolder but not flare up.

Speaking of flare-ups, this grill did NOT exhibit flare-ups at all.Even with fatty pieces of chicken that had been marinated in an olive oil mixture, there was almost no burning or smoking, even on the "searing" side of the hot grill.

When turned down low, I also found the evenness of the heating surface to be impressively consistent, and the large stainless "grill" surface not only made great marks on the food, but also did not stick as badly as most coated steel or iron grill surfaces do.

On the con side, I can imagine that the perforated screen is going to require some periodic maintenance to keep it clean. The good news is that it comes out in three easy-to-handle sections shaped like little trays, each holding a section of grill. You pull the "tray" up and out, then lift the grill surface out of the tray making both very easy to clean.

One final note - I also prepared a boneless leg of lamb on the grill using a "generic" rotisserie (Grill-Pro brand).it *barely* fit between the closed lid and the grill surface, but again, the infrared cooking system worked beautifully. I warmed it up at full throttle for about 5-10 minutes before mounting the marinated lamb roast, then allowed it to sear beautifully for about 15 minutes. Then I turned the burners all down to their lowest settings, threw on a thumb-sized stick of oak from one of our trees, and dropped the lid.

An hour and a half later, we enjoyed one of the best lamb roasts I have ever had!

Highly recommended, especially if you can get it for the price I paid (which was about $[...] less than Amazon's currently listed price)

Pros:
*Great heat output for searing
*Even distribution of heat for predictable results
*Good low-temp performance
*Easy to use wood chips for flavor
*Good build quality in the hood and firebox

Cons:
*Bottom 1/2 of construction is a bit flimsy, but better than many at this price point
*Requires pre-heating for about 10 minutes for best results
*Periodic clean-up probably required for optimum performance

Char Broil Magnum 500 Four-Burner Gas Grill, with Sideburner Review

Char Broil Magnum 500 Four-Burner Gas Grill, with Sideburner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I see so many people that submit reviews here that don't even own the product.Well, I own a very similar Charbroil, so I can actually tell you how great it is.

Is a Weber better?Certainly. It also costs two to three times as much.

I can say that the Charbroil I have gets up to 500-600 degrees, perfect for searing meats. And everything we have grilled on it has been fantastic.

It is not made of high grade materials. Why?Because they cost much more. But they don't make the grill cook better, they make it last longer. So, you have to decide if paying $900 for a grill that lasts 10 years (you will still have to replace the innards two times) or a grill that lasts 3-4 years that costs 1/3 the price is best for you.

Personally, I like the latter. And there are ways to make sure your grill lasts as long as possible no matter what you buy.First thing I do out of the box is coat every stainless steel piece with WD-40.Every screw as well. And always the side burner. This rejects some of the moisture that builds up in these units.

Get a good cover. It makes a huge difference.A cover you can easily put on and take off is key, because you will use it, which, of course, is the only way it is effective.

I also take vasoline to every exposed screw and moving joint in the unit.I skip the ones that heat up, but there are so many places where rust can begin and it cannot begin under vasoline.

Repeating this process before winter and in the spring does wonders.

The burners will rust.Part of the deal. They rust in all grills because the heat impacts them dramatically.Be prepared to replace them at least once in the four years this grill performs for you.

Finally, look for Charbroil's and the like on sale. When you buy an expensive grill, they are rarely discounted that much. But Charbroil's and the like have regular clearances. We bought a last season model almost identical to this one, but that came with a rotisserie, for $199 (It sold for $369 the year before). And we got two free tanks of propane for our trouble.

Comparing a Charbroil to a Weber is like comparing a Camry to a high end Lexus. The Lexus, certainly, is a better car.But in reality, they both do exactly the same thing and the Camry costs a small fraction of the price.Compare apples to apples and never rank a product you don't own.It is unfair to those considering the product.

Weber 426001 Q 300 Propane Gas Barbecue
Average Reviews:

I've had the Q300 for about 10 weeks and grilled on it 3-4 times per week. Grilled steaks, roasts, chicken (both direct and indirect heat), pork
loins, hamburgers and hotdogs and the Q300 handled it all.

Gets hot fast:
From start with both burners on high...3 minutes grill is at 310 degrees....7 minutes 400 degrees.....10 minutes 520 degrees....14 minutes maxes out at 590 degrees

I like to cook chicken and pork over indirect heat, so I really like having the two burners with separate controls. The larger burner runs the perimeter of the grill and a second, smaller burner, goes down the center.

Outside burner only (High)..maintains 400 degrees,(Low)..300 degrees
Center burner only (High)..maintains 300 degrees,(Low)..200 degrees
Both burners on (High)..maintains 590 degrees, (Low)..500 degrees

Heavy duty cast-iron cooking grates. Grates dimensions are 25" x 17.5".

I did tons of research online to find the best gas grill. I wanted a good quality grill that will last, not rust out and not need constant upkeep and replacement parts.I'm only cooking for my wife and I so I did not need a huge oversized grill. I checked all of the local big box stores. The smaller grills at these stores had a nice price tag ($80-$150) but they were so flimsy and all of the online reviews said they either rusted out or broke after a year or two of use.I was willing to step it up a notch and pay more, but in the big box stores all you get for a bigger price tag is a bigger grill that will still rust out and break down after a couple of years.I wanted something that would last. The next option up in the big box stores was to purchase a Weber. Weber has a great reputation for quality, but they are so expensive and big. I found that the Broil King brand was the perfect solution to my problem. They build high quality grills (via Onward Manufacturing Co. which has some affiliateion with Weber, but I'mnot sure what.) Broil King has several differnt models with a lot of configurations and options. They are one of the few companies that use cast aluminum for the oven (it will not rust and comes with a lifetime warranty).Their burner design is praised in online reviews and comes with a 5 year warranty. They use heavy duty cast iron cooking grids that weigh over seven pounds each. Their heat diffuser (Flav-R-Wave) is made of heavy duty stainless steel (other companies use cheap steel..just a step up from aluminum foil). I finally narrowed my search down to a Monarch or Crown model. Amazon's price ($319), no tax and free shipping sold me on the Monarch 40.

One thing to note, is that the stand looks like stainless steel, but it isn't. It is steel painted to look like stainless. Also, I agree with another poster that the stand could use some extra stffness. The fact that the casters are plastic bother me, but they work and they are used on all of the Broil King's grills. So I think the only con on the Monarch line is the cart/stand.It will last, but I think the actual grill will outlast the cart.Of course, this is the bottom of the Broil King line.In the end, I think I finally found what I was looking for. I just wish Broil King was sold in more local stores. If they were, the would tear up the competition!

One final thought. The "Mr. Bar-B-Q Platinum Prestige Medium Grill Cover" is the perfect fit and best quality cover I have found. It was only $19.99 when I bought it...and free shipping!

Char-Griller 3001 Grillin' Pro 40,800-BTU Gas Grill Review

Char-Griller 3001 Grillin' Pro 40,800-BTU Gas Grill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've done plenty of research and seen many grills before picking the 'Char-Griller Pro 3001'.I think if you really want a solid grill that lasts forever, get a Weber. For me paying $700+ for a similar Weber isn't an option. You also should beware of the inexpensive stainless steel grills (anything under $400).Their not stainless, the metal is thin & flimsy and they start showing signs of rust in a matter of months.I even saw some demos with rust stains??This shouldn't be a problem with the finish on the Char-Griller.Plus I noticed it ranked well in Consumer Reports.I picked mine up at Menards for $149.00 (on 06/26/09).
At times it was challenging to put together. The pictures and directions could've been more descriptive on which way things face when you put them together (ie: the legs).Plus the location of parts within the box.I had to find parts that I needed early in the installation that were wrapped up with things late in the installation?! Once you get it together it's pretty solid. It starts easily and heats up fast. For me in less than 5-10 min. on high the temperature gage was at 650 degrees (on a windy 70 degree day in Chicago). The grates are porcelain coated cast iron. That's a feature you want to look for in a grill. You'll see those on higher priced models. The grates have a side for 'Searing' and a side for 'Grilling'.They cleanup easily and give GREAT grill marks. Now mind you my last grill was a 12 year old 'Char-Broil' that was shot and I've only used this one twice. But from what I can tell (so far) unless you want to pay a ton for something better this is a great grill for the price.

Update: 07-27-09
It's still a great grill for the price.I have one thing I never liked and if you're coming from an older grill like me you should be aware of this.Older gas grills (5 or 10 years) had the burners right along the bottom of the grill base with a metal shield over the top.You then had 5 inches or so between the shield and the grilling grates. This would give you space for 'Lava Rock', 'Ceramic Brickets' and some wood chips if you choose. The rocks or bricks would catch grease and reduce flare ups.To keep the grill clean you change the rock out once a season or so.NONE OF THE NEW GRILLS (including the Char-Griller) are setup like this. They ALL have the burners and shields right below the grilling grates. And you have no room for anything below the burners. So you need to be sure to keep the bottom of the grill CLEAN and CLEAR of debris (drip trays too).As I stated before this grill heats fast and puts out a good flame.Well after cooking about 10 times or so I had some debris and an oily film on the bottom from cooking & basting things.Yep you guessed it, FIRE, FIRE!Luckily I caught it after just a couple minutes of cooking and shut it down and put everything out.I cleaned out the bottom turned it back on and it was fine.So be safe and keep it clean!
